Department of Envirsument and Natural Resource Administrative Order (DAO) 2021-36, declaring the 405-hectare Sasmuan Bangkung Malapad coastal wetland in Sasmuan town as a critical habitat and ecotourism area. SBMCHEA is a mangrove islet in the Pasak River, a part of the large enclosed sea of Manila Bay that was formed by the volcanic sediments from the Mount Pinatubo’s devastating eruption in 1991. This island is now a focal point of conservation due to the fact that it now hosts some 13 hectares of fully grown mangroves and has been identified as a layover destination for thousands of migratory birds. With the recent influx of tourists that are attracted to the serene beauty of the area, aside from the seasonal birdwatchers, local officials have realized the island’s potential and the urgent need to protect it
